Imagine a dotted, bursting with color, one inch by inch square cramming an entire country’s worth of culture into a tiny postage stamp. Ever since I was 5 years-old I have enjoyed finding these pieces of art that represent the fond memories of my travels. I am a true numismatist at heart as stamp collection has been passed down across three generations. My family’s history lies in these albums and convey the world’s history from the shift in geopolitics, to rivalry in athletic teams globally. From the dotted borderlines to the size 6 font, each symbol is unique as the amalgamation of these features present the true image. My first stamp album, shiny-red with a bright gold line striking through the bind, initiated my learning of the art of peeling off stamps. The analytical mindset required to recognize the stamp's color combination from the tricolor flag to a multicolored flower, made every stamp unique.
On August 15, 1947, India's independence marked a historic yet disastrous moment, witnessing one of the bloodiest cultural and religious partitions in history. This photograph captures the triumphant celebration of India's freedom, but beneath the surface, it serves as a reminder to my family and countless others of the lives and homes lost during the partition. The intricate dotted embroidery, the tricolor flag standing out against the sky blue clouds, and the inscription of "Azad" in Hindi collectively symbolize the essence of freedom, both visually and linguistically. This postage stamp photograph not only recalls memories of my personal stamp collection pursuits but encapsulates the enduring history of this tradition passed down in my family since the pivotal year of 1947.
